MWA Meeting 6 Atlanta

This post is over due but I still wanted to share our meeting this month here in Atlanta.  We had a great turnout and it was nice to see a few new faces in the crowd.  We met at the usual time of 9am at Boulevard Dinner had breakfast and talked woodworking.

We also took some time discussing up coming events here in Atlanta that we are really excited about.  Next month on Feb. 12th at 2pm we have a Google SketchUp introduction by Aaron Marshall at Woodcraft here in Atlanta.  Steve the owner of our local Woodcraft has been kind enough to offer their classroom to us.  If you can make it would love to have all that can attend but if now we are working on recording it to post on the MWA site.

I also, received confirmation from The Woodworking Shows that we have a booth at the Atlanta show in March. The show is schedule to be here March 9-11.  We will have a booth and be giving 3 mini-instructional sessions per day.  If you are interested in helping out and manning the booth for a few hours let me know so that we can split the time up.

I have attached a few pictures....some of which are just to funny not to post!

MWA Meeting 2 Seattle

Saturday was the second meeting of the Seattle Chapter of MWA.  We all met up at Patty’s Eggnest, in the Northgate area, for a great breakfast.

Jesse Cizek Allen, Mike Lingenfelter, Glenn Thompson

Center: Marilyn Gutherie

It was fun get together, we probably could have stayed there and talked for hours.  Although, after breakfast we all headed down to Crosscut Hardwoods in Seattle.  Some of us were buying and some just browsed and planned future projects.

We also jumped over to Compton Lumber, just across the street from Crosscut.  Jesse found a great deal on some Birch plywood he needs, for an Entertainment Center his building.  I’m glad we choose to hope over there!

The next meeting for the Seattle Chapter, will be on Feb 25, at the Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event in Seattle.  More details to come.

Modern Woodworking Live?

Fine Woodworking has announced their Fine Woodworking Live event.
FWW is billing it as:

Your chance to enjoy the company of other passionate craftspeople as you learn from the experts whose work you've seen in our pages. Live demonstrations and hands-on workshops are at the heart of this limited-attendance event.This three-day conference will give you the opportunity to enjoy a range of sessions created specifically for this event. Friday and Saturday will each start with a general session, followed by three complete small-group sessions on topics by each expert. On Sunday, a range of additional sessions will be offered for specific concentrations on detailed areas of interest.
It's being held in New Paltz, NY on August 2nd through the 5th. New Paltz is an upstate New York college town about 2 hours north of New York City (1 hours south of Albany). It should be fairly easy to ready for all of New England, much of the middle Atlantic and beyond. As Modern Woodworkers, I think we should try to attend and even organize our own dinner or other event during the conference. Hanging out at events like this are what the Modern Woodworkers Association is all about.

As we used to say in high school; Nothing is shinny in New Platz, except your future.

Get Your Online Woodworking Chat On

As a group focused on the online woodworking community, one the things we at the Modern Woodworkers Association have wanted to do for a while is set up a forum. That said, we've also understood that each of us only have so much time to spend online and there are already a number of great and popular online woodworking forums. The last thing we're looking to do is dilute the community.

That's why we're so happy to announce that rather than start our own forum to compete for your time and energy, we've partnered with the premier online woodworking forum, Wood Talk Online.

When I say partnered, what I mean is that Marc has been nice enough to create a section on the WTO Forum dedicate to the Modern Woodworkers Association. It has dedicated General Discussion, Meetup & Project Showcase rooms. There, MWA members and others will be able to chat about wood, projects and meeting up.

Our section can be found right here: http://woodtalkonline.com/mwa

If you're not already a member of the Wood Talk Online Forum, you should be. As if the general forum wasn't enough, now we're there too!

p.s. - Once you try it out, hit the Support The Community button on the upper right of the main WTO page. We're using the forum to help spread our love of woodworking. Helping to cover it's operating costs is the least we can do.

Which WIA12 Will You Attend?

Popular Woodworking has announced that they will host two (2) Woodworking in America events in 2012. One in Pasadena, CA on October 12-14 and the other in Covington, KY on November 2-4. As hanging out with woodworking friends is the absolute best part of any Woodworking in America conference, we'd like to know which venue do you prefer?

When they first stated there would be two (2) venues in their weekly newletter, there was a twitter discussion that we should poll each other and see which venue was better for everyone.

While we'd encourage everyone to attend the event that works better for them, the more of us that can get together, the better either event will be. Some people, like myself, may even include which is the favored venue in deciding which one to go to ourselves.

Another Great #woodchat: Jan. 18, 2012

A great group of #woodchat-ers met online to talk wood.  This #woodchat session featured a special guest expert to answer questions about wood:  Shannon Rogers, from the The Renaissance Woodworker, Hand Tool School, and Marketing Director for J. Gibson McIlvain Company.

Instead of posting full transcripts here, I'm going to try doing it as a link. Please let me know if you encounter problems viewing the transcript:

@DyamiPlotke: Hey #woodchat hope all is well. I've been off twitter for the day (work), but I'll try to participate if get home soon.

@Tooltutor: Going to miss #woodchat tonight. Going on 19 hrs in the delivery room. Why didn't anyone tell me about this part? #fatherhood

@uppercutwood: @Tooltutor congratulations! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I will be hanging out on Google+ during #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Good evening all #woodchat

@Tumblewood: I have woodchat up on Tweetchat...I'll record what I can. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: OK, woodchat is officially starting. I hope people can make it tonight. We're going to discuss where to get materials (cont) #woodchat

@uppercutwood: including wood, hardware, and other unique materials and how to incorporate them into your projects. (cont)#woodchat

@uppercutwood: May also discuss making your own hardware, or aging hardware. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @Tumblewood Good to see you Vic, I miss your musk! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @Tooltutor doesn't that kid know its time for #woodchat? #congrats

@uppercutwood: I got the topic idea after looking for the screen material for these lockers. #woodchat http://t.co/ksScuZzb

@uppercutwood: @MansFineFurn How about other supplies, like unique materials into your projects, glass, screen, lighting, led, chrome, kevlar #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Or we could decide to cover another topic altogether, it's up to you guys #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood Cool lockers. I like the fact they have screen on the bottom to to let snow drain to the floor.#woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson I thought that was interesting. These guys have cool door grilles http://t.co/jGunMuV1#woodchat

@thewoodninja: Evening fellas #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood I get most of my hardware from local true value or Lee Valley. You? #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood No, I saw the tile floor and assumed... Hmm.. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @DyamiPlotke There are some cool custom suppliers, I always forget to check McMaster Carr though and it's a goldmine #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood @MansFineFurn I typically get inspired for non-standard materials from work. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood I'll have to check them next time. Thanks. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: On materials, anybody have a cheap source of plexiglass. The thicker stuff like 1/4" is expensive #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson I would try McMaster Carr #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: I don't use much in the way of non-std materials. I've been wanting to incorporate stone (rough granite?) into a design, bench? #woodchat

@thewoodninja: Not material but I'm looking for raised panel router bit sets. Usually use MLCS. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: I haven't used any non standard materials so far either, but I can see working them in #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @MansFineFurn stone is a great idea - I keep forgetting that, and slate, ceramic, or glass tiles too #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Does anyone have a project with unique materials they'd like to share? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Check out some of the cool materials here, that you could put into a frame and panel door http://t.co/rrv7TkpL#woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood I'll look, but I really hate the Mcmaster Carr website. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I'm especially interested in including high tech items into a desk. Lighting, power, USB, phone docking, speakers...#woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @uppercutwood Interesting stuff. I can see some possibilities for future cabinets. Thanks for the link. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood Yeah, there are some cool desk products, but they are really expensive for how simple they are. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood sintered Stainless steel mesh looks cool from the link you just sent #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson I would be happy with a USB 3.0 hub that was discrete to power up devices #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: yes, the sintered mesh is quite interesting. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @MansFineFurn $77 per square foot for that! #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood One thing I found that Monoprice is a really cheap place to buy monitor mounting hardware cant find anything USB3 #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood just said it was cool, not that I could afford it! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I am going to see Darrell Peart this weekend and audio record his G&G presentation with a new microphone.#woodchat

@kweinert: Anyone done anything with shoji paper? #woodchat

@sharpendwood: @uppercutwood I've used tin for panels that I punched a design into #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood I just checked out his website, wow! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: I have a design concept that requires a large diameter 1-2" marble (the glass shooting kind, cateyes etc.) but black. Sources? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @kweinert I haven't, but I have been wanting to try a lamp with paper. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood @MansFineFurn I have used & love glass tiles in my woodworking projects #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson I get to video tape his presentation on the 29th where he shows his shop. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sharpendwood Did you make your own punching tools? Were these similar to tile ceilings? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood true, maybe a blown-glass sphere would work instead. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @MansFineFurn I would say Ax-man Surplus but they are only located in Minnesota. #woodchat

@ramblinrdesigns: #woodchat This is a test. Is anybody there?

@BillGriggs: Hello alln #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @MansFineFurn They might be able to get you a solid one too. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Another good source for oddities is http://t.co/bFXAV9im they have lots of shop supplies too. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood here's my walnut & glass tile book stand #woodchat http://t.co/3WS4lwKq

@uppercutwood: Bill we are discussing sourcing and using interesting materials in your designs (glass, stone, metal, electronics, kevlar, etc) #woodchat

@asliceofwood: hello all tonight #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood Parking meter guts...Cool! #woodchat

@BillGriggs: I'm learning Corian and wood inlays.nn #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @kweinert Great place to get containers too #woodchat

@imaginer99: Hello all! Is his still where woodchat is? #Woodchat

@uppercutwood: @BillGriggs Do you have any photos or links showing the corian inlays? #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @BillGriggs Corian inlaid in wood, wood inlayed in Corian or somethin different #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @thewoodninja hey kenny....hows it going tonight? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Thanks @kweinert ...you found my marbles!! http://t.co/Y31Hk8GP #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @imaginer99 It sure is, welcome aboard #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @imaginer99 Last time I checked that's what we were doing. #woodchat

@BillGriggs: No photos yet. Wood inlayed in Coriann #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I got to do some interesting stuff over the holidays, I used a laser engraver on cherry. Smelled and looked great.#woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood you should post on the laser engraving on wood sometime #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I also got the new Bosch Router (this one) http://t.co/Z1jXS0sy #woodchat

@kweinert: @MansFineFurn Glad I could help. It's been a while, but I used them for a project once. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @asliceofwood I will be posting photos and video of the laser engraving soon. I used a "makerspace" laser for $1 per minute #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sharpendwood #woodchat any photos of the project that incorporated tin?

@asliceofwood: @uppercutwood what did you engrave? a sign? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @asliceofwood Arrow Of Light award plaques for a local Boy Scout Troop. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @uppercutwood well worth the $1 per minute #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood Whats the status of G+ it sounds like Al is done with the twitter woodchat #woodchat

@sharpendwood: Pic of one of the tin panels. One of my 1st ww projects. #woodchat http://t.co/xhpechyy

@WVWoodshed: Nearly forgot #woodchat tonight... How's everyone this evening?

@BillGriggs: @uppercutwood I am in the process of rebuilding a lasercutter. Here is a link.http://www.makermasters.com/bills-projects #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson I don't know the status of G+ chat, @Tumblewood is driving it and we need to discuss. If it works, I'm in! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson Last time we tried G+ it didn't work well #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sharpendwood that looks awesome, and labor intensive! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @asliceofwood Trophy shops were a lot more expensive than $1 per minute #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @BillGriggs Where do you find the money for these toys :) #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @uppercutwood @benjamenjohnson we gave up on g+ too quickly #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @uppercutwood I could imagine them being more expensive #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood mentioned yesterday, If G+works & all can participate as equals, I'm sold too, not with limited participation (video #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @asliceofwood It's improving everyday, I'm sure we'll be back to G+ #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @asliceofwood @uppercutwood "we gave up on g+ too quickly" it just wasn't clear on what we should have been doing. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @WVWoodshed the new Bosch is epically awesome, except for the proprietary template bushing stuff. they have a PC adapter though. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: It would be great if G+ works out for #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood Wow where were makerspaces 15 years ago when I was trying to engrave a hardened steel sword? #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @benjamenjohnson haha yeah, everyone was chatting everywhere that night #woodchat

@sharpendwood: @uppercutwood Thanks! It was a lot of pounding, but kinda fun :) #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @sharpendwood I need to try that again. I remember doing a project like that in grade school. Simple but cool#woodchat

@asliceofwood: @WVWoodshed are there apply symbols on your chisels on your blog? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: We have this at work to use for free, but they need to safety train you first and I haven't been trained yethttp://t.co/r7rMfjSZ #woodchat

@WVWoodshed: Man I hope #woodchat is fading out! Participation is way down tonight, huh!!!

@uppercutwood: @WVWoodshed to make sure it doesn't fade, what topics would you like covered? #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @WVWoodshed it isn't fading could be transmission issues with the different connection software #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood What are you waiting for? Or is the training schedule out of your hands. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @BillGriggs I need to be better at reminding people during the day, and I'm behind on posting transcripts.#woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson training schedule is out of my hands. they wait for enough people, then they hold a session#woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood did we cover all of the topics from the 'topics' list already? If not, lets work down the list. (send all the link) #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @WVWoodshed It's been a strange week, for me at least, maybe it's something about this time of year. Or it could be the weather #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @MansFineFurn Good idea, please hold #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood the transcripts have been posted (almost) religiously on G+ Woodchat (though I have had to send it to Vic alot) #woodchat

@WVWoodshed: Well let's just hope it's the time of year or whatever! @benjamenjohnson #woodchat

@BillGriggs: @uppercutwood How about which light and dark woods play well together. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: I'm always looking for new woods to work with. I just used some camaru. it fuzzes alot when machined and is hard on chisels #woodchat

@uppercutwood: The woodchat owners are going to hangout and talk about next steps to push woodchat forward #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @BillGriggs Like that one. Combinations of woods/materials that complement #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @BillGriggs Good question. I like maple and walnut. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: A discussion on people's experiences with exotics - what to look for and look out for #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson Where is Camaru from? Tell us about it! #woodchat

@BillGriggs: @benjamenjohnson I have some Walnut waiting to be used. Now to get some more Maple.n #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood I suggest a topic be chosen early and oft repeated during the week. may get people thinking and lining up links #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Perhaps I can get Shannon Rogers of @mcilvainlumber to host a discussion about woods #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @MansFineFurn good idea Nick. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood http://t.co/CDjovwWo Oops been spelling it wrong #woodchat
